Egon, this reminds me.... by DanSchoening Egon, this reminds me.... by DanSchoening
Peter:...of the time you tried to drill a hole through your head. Remember that?
Egon: That would have worked if you hadn't stopped me.

So how would that scene actually have played out?

Here's my take on the moments before Egon attempts to drill a hole in his head. In case you are unfamilar with the concept of drilling a hole in your head, it's correct medical term is "Trepanation" or "Trepanning." It is centuries old in practice. And some believed that drilling a hole in your head would cause more blood to rush to your brain. Therefore, making you think better. I'm assuming Egon thinks he could expand his brain capacity this way ;) Here is the wiki entry on trepanation, [link] a very interesting read.

So what better way to kick off October, than with some Ghostbusters art! Big thanks to :iconsweete: too :D

Cheers

I believe on the IDW Ghostbusters wiki, it's mentioned that one of these future issues will have a tribute to Harold Ramis in it.  I believe, if you buy the paperbacks (like I do that combine issues), it'll be Paperback Issue #7 that comes out sometime in April (April 22 for Amazon buyers).  But don't quote me on that, I'm not an official anyone with the artists, illustrators, writers, IDW, etc.  Just a big, dedicated fan who happened upon what seems to be information.

This is super cool! I love all the little things! Like the drill effect, the light reflecting off the glasses, and the dust particles passing in front of the light. This is fantastic!

In medieval times, drilling a hole in someone's head was an attempt to rid people of insanity.

Needless to say, it didn't really work

Interesting, I never thought that one of my favorite exchanges of dialogue in the movie could've had some major story behind it. ;)
Until today, I never knew there really were people who drilled holes in their heads. (Not something, I'd be willing to try personally.)

Your Ghostbusters fanart is always well done & stylish. This really does look like what might've happened. ;)

Funny, I had almost the same scene in my head. Only Egon had constructed some kind of weird helmet and a stand for the drill, looking extremely concentrated and ready to take notes.

There actually was a lady that did that in the 70's. This gal ran for public office in the UK under her "Legalized trepanation for psycho/spiritual benefits"-type platform. She had a documentary filmed where she actually did the proceedure on herself (with basic medical precautions, unlike Egon's 'Black & Decker' method). She cut a hole in her skull over her "Third Eye-Chakra" area (mid-forehead) & after bandaging-up, went out with her friends. Really weird.

No, she recovered just fine. I don't know much about her. I think she later looked back on the whole thing like "What was I thinking?!" years later. I'll have to look it up.
