Some more Wacom practice. I added in some efx in PS afterwards. Kind dig how it came out. Just kinda though :)

This was for a thread over at Concept Art entitled, "SOMETHING BEAUTIFUL IN THE MIDST OF THE EXPANSIVE UGLY."

The concept I did here is a bit cliche, but I'm still working on coming up with more original thought.

Cheers

hey man.... first off let me start by saying i am a huge fan of your work i always look forward to seeing what you come up with next...

since i know this is a concept piece and one that you are working on the only thing that i personally think would enhance it's look/feel is since you have such a strong spot light coming down you should put some strong light outlines on the inside of the ahhh thingy's arms...

other than that i personally think it is too early in the image to offer more critique looking awesome soo far....

rich

p.s. the only reason i was low on the impact is because you said to are still working on it

oh my.. thats beautiful!
it got my eyes from far, i love the patern you have used, and i think the compossition is really nice as well,... but i think there is a problem with the depth and the lightening.... you have drawn those two branches near and blur, and yet you focused the tree so clear... i think you could have added more branches between them with different grades of blur...to get a better depht effect...and maybe a place more crowed would make more contrast with the place of the butterfly...more calm and empty...

About the lightening...well the tree misses contrast, and darker shading in the other side of the light...
The light is directed to the main point of the drawing (i love that ;) ), and you can see perfectly the way...
to get a good effect of that... the rest of the place must be alot more dark when you go far from the light...so the most far branches and also the bottom of the tree should be almost black...
also the butterfly makes a shadow over the mushrom (love that as well xP ) but it stops... and there is no shadow over the grass...

You are right about the riginality, its a very used topic though (and even more now with the good&evil contest xp )
But its your view! ;)

i think your weak points are contrast and depth, and your stronger is your vision and compossition.
Over all its a very beautiful job.
Keep it up!

I feel somehow compelled to leave a message of some sort here. I don't know what this pull is, but I'll get to the bottom of it, for sure. Great piece. Very trapping.

I'm waiting on the jaws to close on the butterfly. It's just like the perfect pose, because you know, that beauty is gonna get ugly as soon as that little tihng lands...

Thanks a ton man! Love your coloring work. I knew I had seen your name in a book I just bought recently. I took a look, and low and behold there it was in the Dragon's Lair Trade. Love it :) Cheers

Hey, thanks! :)
I didn't do much of anything in that, though.
I think I colored a few covers and that's it.
My primarily role in that book was as the publisher.

Few will care if it is cliched, especially if it is presented well. Which is what you did!

Now, that mutated Venus Fly Trap of sorts has an eye near the bottom of its tendrils, yes?

with your comment of 'something beautiful among the ugly', it made me think of the 'memory of nibelheim' thing in ff7 when Tifa's a tard for the materia fountain.

i think this is better, though. :D

It's odd. I think I saw this here first. Than I stumbled across it in a sort of haze at ConceptArt and went...wait a moment...Haven't I seen this before? Like recently? Somewhere other than DA? Funny...Oddly enough, that hasn't happened as often as you'd think considering the burgeoning populations both here and CA. I think the only other one I've picked up but not in an accidental way was BlueFooted. Oh well. Keep posting on CA!

Absolutely Stunning.

The use of color, lighting, and effects. the simplicity of the design.

The play on the fact that the butterfly is attracted to the "bait" and that it is actually a creature....

WELL DONE!

I could use your talent on a current project of mine!!!

The peeps on Deviant never cease to astound me with their creativity, and talent.

Thanks! Ah it's pretty loosey goosey. I'm trying to get more gestural lines into my work. Normally everyone only sees the crispy vector work I submit, so it's fun to show the other side.

Funny, I was thinking for your concept art that it would be that teeny little stimulus check (enough to take the family to 6 Flags) in the midst of a huge ugly stimulus bill.

As for a more detailed critique on your art, I had to enlarge it to see what the good was. But the wicked elements, like thorny branches, were evil in an end-of-Sleeping-Beauty-castle evil.
